Blink Eight Times

In Katernberg

You got off at the Abzweig Katernberg stop. Take a look around. I’ve been here many times before; is this your first time? Our destination is the advertising column at the PACT Zollverein building. We first have to walk to Haldenstrasse. Do you see the street sign near the high hedge? Watch out for cars as you leave the tram stop and only read on once you’ve reached the sign at the corner.

I picture you standing at the beginning of Haldenstrasse. Walk a few metres down the street, until you see the small apartment buildings on your right. Then read on.
On your right is a row of apartment buildings. Variations of grey—blue-grey, dove-grey, brown-grey. Typical for the Ruhr area. On your left, a dump. In fact, it’s a slag heap, for mining waste. Typical for the Ruhr area. Please take out Map B to get your bearings for these last few metres. Walk down Haldenstrasse, following the marked dots, and take your first left. I’ll leave you alone there for a while. On the next page I have to say goodbye to you. Let’s use this last walk to look neither forward nor backward, but to gaze directly into the present. For these last few metres, look for cracks in the interdimensional wallpaper yourself, and become aware of the multitude of possibilities, dimensions, perspectives. When you walk by the giant birds or pass through the factory gate, think of me. Do you have an idea why I’m taking you this way, and not the usual route to the PACT building? The usual paths are too well polished, the varnish is too solid, it doesn’t flake off—there’s nothing there but the surface. Follow the path marked on
Map B until you get to the advertising column at the PACT Zollverein building.

Once you arrive, please continue reading on page 70. It will be our last page together.
